In many ways this image fits well for my friend Bryan’s newsletter post Teaching with AI: strategies against cheating – a human student and a robot stand in for AI both look at each other with critical “what are you doing here” gazes.
Fine.
But look how much is stereotyped here.
- The trope of university education as passive students sitting in large halls to presumably a lecture.
- At a glance the class is predominantly male, maybe 5% female and predominantly light skinned.
- Why are so many faces distorted?
- Why is the paint peeling?
- Why are there analog clocks and what looks like a bell on the back wall?
- And why is AI always a robot? Why? Why?
Is this then the bias of the training data or is it our own impositions of what to generate? Since the prompt used to create the image is not included, we have no reference- I have been suspecting often the humans at the prompt box ask for robots in the images. Or is that off? Is all that Generative AI can generate foir itself is white plastic humanod robots, where is thde creativity? the imagination?
The metaphors are dull dull dull.

The robot thinks the boy is weird. And I too am wondering if my comments are syndicated.
